VH1's:  Can't Get A Date

Finding love isn't easy. It means having to date, and that is something many people are just no good at. They might be intelligent, witty, even good looking, but somehow they can't say or do the right things to attract and intrigue potential partners.

Can't Get a Date explores the problems of such people and teaches them the skills to find love in an honest, amusing and unique way.

Viewers are guided through Can't Get A Date by The Host, who is heard but never seen. Like a modern day Cyrano de Bergerac, The Host offers the loveless advice from behind the camera. He is a surrogate voice for the audience, providing the frank, straight-up wisdom they wish they could give. It's poignant. It's incisive. And it's always the truth - even when it hurts.

The emphasis in Can't Get a Date is on its characters. It's a show about the changes real people make to find love. The main character is introduced through interviews, punctuated by scenes showing their social inadequacies in action. The characters reveal, consciously or otherwise, what has been hindering them in their search for romance. Each has his or her own peculiar problems, allowing these scenes to differ from episode to episode.

Throughout, The Host offers his critique, which can be met with acceptance, reluctance or open denial. With an innovative shooting method, all interactions with The Host happen directly to camera, and a genuine rapport is quickly developed between the characters, The Host, and the audience. It's a technique that helps people forget they are being filmed and captures the essence of real dialogue.

After the subject's flaws have been exposed, the reformation begins. The Host dispenses pointed advice and enlists the help of friends to turn around the subject's losing streak. It's not a tepid makeover performed by self-proclaimed "experts," but rather a fun parade of genuine insights and assistance from down-to-earth everyday people.

This portion of each episode takes the audience into a New York that only a few insiders know, like cul-de-sac boutiques in Soho and old Italian barbershops in the East Village. The subject makes a physical transformation before the audience's eyes, and their attitudes evolve through interactions with The Host - sometimes heated, sometimes hilarious, and always unexpected. When the dust settles, the subject is a different person, inside and out. They now have the tools they need to inspire desire instead of disdain in potential dates.

The show finishes by catching up with the subject a month or more after the process began. How has the experience changed them? What remains the same? What have they learned about themselves, and what do they wish had not come to light? Most importantly, how are they getting on with dating? Like all things in life, the results will vary dramatically. That's how "Can't Get A Date" keeps it real.

All of us, no matter how successful in romance, have occasionally wondered, "Why can't I find love?" Can't Get a Date is a hypnotizing portrait of ordinary people as they wrestle with the most challenging, confusing and fascinating human activity. It's one show everybody can relate to.  Watch It!
