Do’s and Don'ts of Hollywood Couples

By Jeff Cohen, freelance writer (cohenwriting@aol.com)

Just because you don’t walk the red carpet regularly, it doesn’t mean you can’t learn a thing or two from Hollywood couples. Check out these do’s and don’ts based on the ups and downs of celebrity romance.

Brad Pitt & Angelina Jolie

This gorgeous twosome first met on the set of their blockbuster movie, Mr. and Mrs. Smith. It wasn't long before Hollywood was abuzz that they were more than just co-stars. Photos began to surface all over the world of these two in less than compromising positions. The catch is that Brad was still married to Jennifer Aniston at the time. Fast forward to a year later and he and Angelina are basically sharing a home and raising a new family together.

The lesson here is don't just jump into the arms of your next co-star. For all of the non-actor types, that translates into avoiding an inter-office romp with the new hottie in accounting. That doesn't mean that all coworkers are automatically off limits. If you share common interests and feel some real potential there, it just might be worth a shot. Do tread extra carefully though, and remember that the water cooler is just around the corner.

Goldie Hawn & Kurt Russell

These two have happily been together for nearly 25 years. By most Hollywood standards, that's almost an eternity. They've raised a family together and managed to skip right past the altar undetected. It seems to be working out just perfectly for them.

Don't allow yourself to buy into the peer pressure that says you have to be married. This happy couple is proof positive that you don't always need a piece of paper to prove that you and your significant other are committed. Do be proud of your relationship and celebrate the commitment however the two of you see fit. It's perfectly fine to share a home, a family, and a life without the sometimes over-rated title of husband and wife.

Jude Law & Sienna Miller

It's been widely reported that Jude cheated on his then fiancé Sienna with his children's nanny. When the news broke, Sienna was horrified and humiliated. Understandably, she immediately ended things with him. Soon after the less than perfect pair reconciled, it surfaced that she may have had a little affair of her own.

While you may feel a bit vindicated and even justified in doing what Sienna did, it's definitely not smart. Tit for tat in relationships can be highly detrimental. Not only is it childish, but it could even be dangerous. The back and forth games can go on indefinitely and when would it ever end?

Kevin Federline & Britney Spears

Kevin's girlfriend was seven months pregnant with their second child when he left her for Britney. Now that Britney has given birth to their first child, he's already out gallivanting around town.

Don't go into a relationship expecting things to be different with you. If they were cheating on their partner with you, chances are good that they'll also cheat on you. However, that old adage "once a cheater, always a cheater" may not always be true. People certainly can and do change, but it requires hard work. Be realistic in your expectations of your mate and be as patient with them as possible.

Jessica Simpson & Nick Lachey

As soon as Nick and Jessica got married, their relationship went totally public. They signed up for a "Newlyweds" reality show in which they emotionally bared it all for the cameras. Millions of people watched as they fought and made up to no end.

For a relationship to grow, it needs to be maintained in a healthy as well as somewhat private environment. Airing your dirty laundry for the whole world to see is probably not a good idea. Whenever possible, try to refrain from discussing the personal details of your relationship with friends and family. In the long run, these little vent sessions can sometimes come back to haunt you. If you have an issue on your mind, go ahead and initiate a conversation with your partner. That's the one person who really knows you and can help you to work it out.
