Hollywood’s Hottest Trends: “Get Nailed!”
By: Jasmin Bryant
The hottest fashion accessory on any red carpet this season? Black nail polish. You’re thinking Goth chicks, aren’t you? Thanks to stars like Lindsay Lohan, Jessica Alba and Uma Thurman, jet-black nails have left the mosh pits and gone upmarket.
Chanel has its hottest polish since Vamp, in its Fall ’06 collection. It’s called “Black Satin” and retails for $18 at department stores, like Nordstrom and Bloomingdale’s. However, it might be easier to find gold at the end of a rainbow, than getting your hands on this onyx treasure. It’s sold out everywhere! Of course, there’s always eBay. A bottle of this limited edition polish is going for about 40 bucks.
Ouch!
If you want those pitch-dark fingernails we’ve seen on Nicole Richie and Nicky Hilton, but don’t want to drop a wad of cash, there are some less expensive options. Sephora carries a nice black, as well as Color Club. You can find both online. For those who want a really cheap option, you can always check out “Wet N’ Wild,” it’s about 99 cents at your local drugstore or discount store, like Target or Wal-Mart.
Now, the cheaper blacks may not have the same sheen or shine of the Chanel version, so make sure you have a really good topcoat, or perhaps a sheer metallic varnish.
This look can be worn every day. It’s best when unexpected, like when paired with a neutral dress or an off white pantsuit. Talk about sexy. But, listen closely! You should only attempt to rock the midnight varnish, if you have short, neat nails. I mean, really, nobody wants to look like Elvira. And please, please, please, have a fresh manicure. You don’t want black nails, with raggedy cuticles. Do you think Sandra Bullock showed up at her “Lake House” premiere with jagged fingernails? No.
Mary-Kate Olsen and Fergie from the Black Eyed Peas may love their ebony talons, but it’s not a look everyone can feel comfortable with. For the little less adventurous, there’s the nude look.
Paris Hilton has been going nude on her many carpet strolls. So has Scarlett Johansson at the Academy Awards, Anne Hathaway at the “Devil Wears Prada” premiere and Linds on occasion. That girl is a creature of change.
This is great for you “do it yourself” gals. After you clean up your cuticles and hangnails, you just buff, buff and buff some more. Your natural oils will “polish” your nails, till they shine, like Tori Spelling’s or Jennifer Aniston’s.
But again, I must warn you, going nude doesn’t mean letting your nails go unattended. You still need a regular manicure, because after all, you can’t look like a superstar if you have hobo hands.
