Some people think that taking a vacation with the person that you’re dating can be the true test of a relationship. Whether you’ve been together 3 months or 3 years, it can sometimes be a make or break deciding factor for both of you. If it goes perfectly, that can be a good sign for possible future cohabitation. However, if it goes badly, it can be quite destructive to the state of your union. Find out how to read the clues from your vacation to see if the two of you will last.

Underlying Issues: If a relationship is already in trouble, consecutive days spent together will only bring out the tension even more. Any underlying issues between you and your mate will be completely magnified as you spend night after night in each others company. If you bickered about his excessive drinking back at home, it will only get worse with every last margarita that he throws back in Mexico. If it drives you crazy that she’s a total and complete slob, you can forget about expecting her to make the bed on your trip. If you accept your mate for who they are, all the little quirks really shouldn’t bother you. You knew what you were getting into when you decided to date this person despite the minor issues.

Money Talks: If you and your mate are planning to take a trip, it’s probably best to discuss the financial aspects before you even book the flight. Some guys insist on paying for the entire thing, which is extremely generous and not even necessary. Others may find that splitting things evenly is the best way to go. Either way, talk about it ahead of time so that you aren’t caught by surprise when you get to your destination. I knew a guy that took his girlfriend of 3 months on an all expense paid vacation to Puerto Rico only to be shocked by her behavior when they arrived at the hotel. She clearly did not appreciate that he was covering the airfare, hotel, and food. She walked into a boutique and picked out an expensive purse, only to discover that her Amex was rejected. When she pouted until her boyfriend paid the tab, he knew he was in trouble.

General Attitude: On vacation, you and your mate are together for extended periods of time. A person’s true side often comes out when they are in a situation that is beyond their control. The airline loses your baggage and may not be able to locate it for days. Does your guy lose his cool and blow up at the customer service person? Or does he take it all in stride and use the money they provided to buy wacky Hawaiian shirts? You can’t decide where to explore on your first day there and you’ve started bickering. Do you stop the fight in its tracks and remind each other that you are supposed to be on a fun vacation? Or do you argue back and forth until you both decide to bail on the plans all together? The way that you are treating each other on your vacation can be an indicator of how it might be if you lived together down the road.

Keep these tips in mind the next time you and your partner take a vacation together. They just might save a great relationship or help you get out of the wrong one.
